Two cold quarters hurt Quigley Catholic girls' basketball team

Written by Joe Koch on .

If high school basketball games could be decided on what happened in the first and fourth quarters, then the Quigley Catholic Spartans would be preparing for a PIAA Class A second-round game on Wednesday night. But it was those middle two quarters when the Spartans were outscored 26-16 that helped fuel a 49-44 victory for Conemaugh Township in a first-round game held Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown.

The result ended the season for the Spartans, who were 18-7 overall and captured Section 1-A with a 12-0 record.

Fast start pays off for Quigley

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Nick Tolomeo's feature on the Quigley girls' basketball team:

"Quigley Catholic girls basketball coach Bill DelTondo did not have to remind his team about the importance of getting out to a fast start in the playoffs.

The past two seasons, in WPIAL first-round playoff exits, the Spartans saw firsthand how tough it can be to bounce back from a slow start.

This year Quigley turned the tables on the opposition, jumping on California early in the first round on its way to an 81-38 win and getting ahead of St. Joseph early

and cruising to a 60-31 win to reach the WPIAL semifinals for the first time since 2010."
