Quaker Valley hockey team wins rematch of 2012 Penguin Cup final

Written by Sports Town on .

Just like in the PIHL Class A Penguins Cup championship in March, Quaker Valley put the puck in the net more times than Mars last Thursday.

The Quakers improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 win over the Planets, getting two first-period goals from Otto Schaefer. Adam Pilewicz, Cameron Peterkin and Steven Wei also scored for the defending Class A state champions.

Mars got goals from Craig Mazzotta and Ed Schwadron, but could only muster 14 shots against Quaker Valley goaltender Parker Sherry.

The Quakers and Planets, who both play in Section 2-A, split the regular-season series last season, with Mars winning 4-3 in the first contest and Quaker Valley rebounding with a 7-0 win in the second matchup.

The two met again the Penguins Cup championship, with Quaker Valley winning 4-2. It was Mars’ fifth straight appearance in the Penguins Cup final.

The Quakers went on to beat West Chester Rustin 4-1 to win the overall state title.

As for this season, Quaker Valley also won 9-1 Monday against Deer Lakes to remain perfect. The Quakers are one of only three Class A teams, along with Freeport and Westmont Hilltop, to not have a loss yet this season.

Mars, meanwhile, is 3-2 after its 2-1 win over Serra Catholic Tuesday.
