Quaker Valley doubles team embarks on PIAA boys tennis tournament

Written by Chris Adamski on .

A boys tennis powerhouse over the past decade, Quaker Valley did not qualify for the WPIAL Class AA team playoffs this season.

The Quakers' Charlie Wilson and Garrett Powell are making up for that with some postseason accolades of their own.

Wilson, a senior, and Powell, a junior, qualified for the PIAA Class AA doubles tournament when they placed third at the WPIAL tournament earlier this month. Wilson and Powell open up play in the event 10:30 a.m. today against the District 3 championship team of Donegal's Eric Ebersole and Nick Hershey.

The first two rounds of the tournament will be staged today at the Hershey Racquet Club with the semifinals, final and consolation match scheduled for the same venue Saturday.

Wilson and Powell were semifinalists at both the Section 3-AA and WPIAL tournaments. Section 3-AA produced the top three finishers at the team, singles and doubles WPIAL Class AA tournaments. The strength of nine-time reigning WPIAL team champion Sewickley Academy, three-time reigning WPIAL runner-up Hampton and second-season WPIAL member Winchester Thurston all in the same section explains why Quaker Valley missed the team playoffs for the first time in recent memory.
