Quaker Valley boys basketball team one game from state final
Only three different opponents have beaten the Quaker Valley boys basketball team this season. The Quakers have already avenged one of them. If they can do it to another, they'll be headed to Penn State to play for a PIAA championship.
Quaker Valley (24-4) plays WPIAL champion Beaver Falls (27-2) in a PIAA Class AA semifinal 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ambridge. The Quakers and Tigers are Section 6-AA rivals, and Beaver Falls won each of the regular-season matchups. The Tigers won, 86-54, in the section opener Dec. 16 at Quaker Valley and again, 64-48, when they met at Beaver Falls Jan. 20.
Although the average margin of defeat in those games was 24 points, much has changed for Quaker Valley over the past two months.
The Quakers have won 12 of 14 games since, losing only a non-section game to Summit Academy and, 56-55, to Sto-Rox in the WPIAL quarterfinals Feb. 25. But Quaker Valley came back to beat the Vikings, 47-36, March 14 in the second round of the PIAA tournament.
In the previous two meetings with Beaver Falls, the Quakers' Joe Peduto had 14 points and Nelson Westwood 11 in the first loss, while Sam Peduto was the leading scorer in the second defeat with 15 points.
