PG's boys' sports athlete of the week is Quaker Valley's Nelson Westwood

Written by Mike White on .

This week: Westwood had a triple as the Quakers defeated Deer Lakes, 4-0, Tuesday in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals.

Check this out: Westwood, a senior, is a rarity in high school sports these days -- a three-sport athlete. What makes him more rare is he is a captain in all three sports and is enjoying an unforgettable senior season. He was a starter on Quaker Valley's WPIAL championship soccer team, a starter on the basketball team and now a starting center fielder on the baseball team that is 21-0 and will play for a WPIAL title next week. A 4.3 grade point average student, Westwood will attend Lehigh University.

Quaker Valley boys' tennis team returns to semifinals

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

It had been three years since Quaker Valley had been in the WPIAL Class AA tournament, much less won a postseason match.

But the Quakers, who have a rich tradition on the tennis court, were strong this season, getting to the semifinal before losing to Sewickley and then Vincentian to finish fourth.

To reach the semifinals, No. 12 seed Quaker Valley had to beat the No. 5 Blackhawk and No. 4 Southmoreland.

Alumni Update: Colin South (Robert Morris)

Written by Sports Town on .

Senior forward Colin South, a Quaker Valley graduate, will be the Robert Morris hockey team's captain for the 2013-14 season after serving as an assistant captain this year.

“We are very pleased to name Colin South for the captain of the 2013-2014 Robert Morris Hockey Team,” said head coach Derek Schooley. "Colin has really matured as a hockey player and a person over the past season and has big shoes to fill as last year’s captains did an excellent job but feel he is ready to lead our program to the next level."

South will follow in the footsteps of departed senior Brendan Jamison who led Robert Morris to the program’s best record and first 20-win season. South, whose graduating class has never had a losing season, recorded 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 36 games played. Over the course of this past season, South took just one minor penalty while providing a team-high five power-play goals.
