A special month awaits former Pine-Richland soccer star Klingenberg
July will be an amazing time for Meghan Klingenberg.
Klingenberg, a 2007 Pine-Richland High School graduate, is an alternate for the U.S. women’s Olympic soccer team and will travel with the team to the London Olympics.
As an alternate, Klingenberg will practice with the team, but she will not be allowed on the sidelines during games and will only be added to the 18-player primary roster if a teammate is injured.
Klingenberg, a midfielder, was expected to join the team this week as the group begins preparations for the tournament. The team plays an exhibition match in Utah against Canada on Saturday, and opens Olympic play against France in Glasgow, Scotland on July 25.
In her final tune-up for international competition, Klingenberg scored a goal for the Western New York Flash in a Women’s Professional Soccer League game Sunday.
While at Pine-Richland, Klingenberg led the Rams to WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA championships and was named an All-American. She went on to become a starter at the University of North Carolina and also played on the U.S.U-17, U-20 and U-23 National Teams.
Also on tap for Klingenberg in July is a youth soccer camp she is hosting for girls, ages 11 to 18, from July 6 to 8 at the Dick’s Sportsplex in Cranberry Township. More information on the camp can be found at www.mksoccercamp.com.
