Peters Township duo continues WPIAL dominance in girls' tennis doubles

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

Peters Township sophomores Sara Komer and Abby Cummings became the fourth different Indians’ duo in the past six years to win the PIAA Class AAA doubles championship Saturday in Hershey.

It was Komer’s second straight doubles title. She won the championship with Stephanie Smith last season.

The other recent Peters Township state winners in doubles were Julie Stroyne and Emily Palko in 2007 and Stroyne and Caroline Nixon in 2009.

Komer and Cummings did not lose a set in the section, WPIAL or PIAA tournaments on their way to the title.

“With [Komer’s] size, speed and power, I think she’s the best doubles player in the state,” said Oakland Catholic coach Mark Paull, whose pair of Nicole Cyterski and Megan Wasson lost to Komer and Cummings in both the WPIAL and PIAA finals.

It was also the eighth straight season that a WPIAL team finished as the PIAA Class AAA runner-up in doubles.
