"Although the old sports cliche says "Defense wins championships," it was offense that won the 2012 WPIAL Division I girls lacrosse championship.

Despite allowing 18 goals, Peters Township captured its fourthe WPIAL championship in nine years by out-scoring Pine-Richland, 21-18, last Thursday night at North Hills' Martorelli Stadium.

The 18 goals allowed were a season high for the Peters Township defense, but the 21 goals scored were also a season high for the Peters Township offense.

The offensive fireworks allowed the Indians to overcome early deficits of 2-0 and 7-5 to overpower Pine-Richland.

The Rams held a 7-5 lead with 53 seconds remaining in the first half, but a couple of quick goals by junior midfielder Sarah Bootman and sophomore attacker Allison Hurley tied the contest before halftime and set the stage for an impressive Peters Township run."
