Peters Township surives slugfest to win WPIAL girls lacrosse title

Written by Joe Koch on .

If there's any doubt that the two top teams were meeting for the WPIAL championship on Thursday in Division 1 girls lacrosse, the result should have settled any debate.

Meeting for the second time this season, Peters Township rallied from a two-goal deficit in the first half to secure a 21-18 victory over Pine-Richland and the WPIAL Division 1 championship. It was the fourth time the Indians (16-4) had won a WPIAL title, matching the successive crowns won in  2007, 2008 and 2009.

Pine-Richland (16-3) had never played in a WPIAL championship game before. Both teams now advance to this week's PIAA state playoffs. This is the fourth season the PIAA has conducted a state championship in boys and girls lacrosse.

Radnor won titles in 2009 and 2010. Garnet Valley won the 2011 championship. In the first three years of the state playoffs, the championship game has featured two teams from Eastern Pennsylvania.

When Peters Township and Mt. Lebanon met in the regular season, the Indians emerged with a 13-10 victory on the Rams' field. Tied at 7-7 after 25 minutes, the two teams went on a second half scoring rampage that featured scoring runs by both teams.

Peters Township scored seven of the first eight goals in the second half, and Pine-Richland later responded with a 6-1 run of its own. Underclass players shone for the Indians as junior midfielder Hannah Wilcox scored six goals for the Indians, while sophomore attack Allison Hurley added five goals.
