Penn-Trafford's Boyer serves as captain for Class AAA's top hockey team

Written by Chris Adamski on .

He's the captain of the hockey team that has the best record in the PIHL's largest enrollment classification.

But it might not be who you think.

Penn-Trafford is 18-2-1 and leads Class AAA in goals with 139. The Warriors can clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Penguins Cup playoffs with a victory against State College (11-9-1) 8:30 p.m. Monday at Center Ice Arena in Delmont. They also have the top two scorers in Class AAA in Dan Maier (66 points in 18 games) and Conlan Sodrosky (60 points in 20 games).

But it is defenseman Joe Boyer that serves as team captain.

"Joe is a great leader," Penn-Trafford coach Brian Lehnke said.

Boyer, a senior, is third on the team in scoring with 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists) in 19 games. That ranks sixth in the classification and is tops among defensemen. He was named as a PIHL All-star in January. But it is the intangibles that Penn-Trafford values most.
