Oliver playing final baseball season

Written by Chris Adamski on .

Oliver High School will close at the end of this school year, meaning the Bears' baseball team very well might play the final sporting event in the school's history. A pair of right-handed pitchers are out to ensure Oliver goes out the best it can be.

Freshman Dwayne Kellogg and junior Matt Skinger will start the vast majority -- if not all -- of the Bears' games this season.

Coach Carey White had this to say about Kellogg: "He can be real good. He's just a ninth-grader. We just want to add a couple more pitches for his arsenal and make him better for the next three years of high school. Right now, he's mostly just fastball and off speed stuff. We wouldn't mind adding one or two other different types of pitches. His fastball is pretty good, and he changes speeds as much as possible. He's able to throw off some of the better hitters off the in the (City League)."

White added this in regards to Skinger: "Matt, he's a nice baseball player. A very good hitter, a contact hitter -- not a lot of power but a lot of contact. And again, he's one of our better players that I can count on for some run production throughout the season hopefully. He played a variety of different positions (in Oliver's season opener Monday) -- third, catcher, pitcher. He can play a lot of places, wherever we need the most help."
