In November, the Obama Academy girls volleyball team won a City League title its first season. The boys team followed suit Wednesday by claiming its first City League crown.

"We won six straight titles at Schenley before the school was closed," Obama Academy coach Pete Vitti said. "The goal of this team, and our four seniors, was to carry on the winning tradition we had at Schenley by starting a new winning tradition here at Obama."

Obama was seeded first in the four-team double-elimination tournament at Brashear High School. The Eagles defeated Carrick, 25-11, 25-12, in the semifinals, and Allderdice edged Brashear, 22-25, 27-25, 15-9.

Obama faced Allderdice in the winner's bracket final and had to rally from a first set loss to pull out a 16-25, 25-17, 15-8 victory.

Allderdice then beat Brashear, 25-23, 25-12, in the consolation bracket to earn a rematch with Obama.

In the title match, Josh Grate, a 6-3 senior middle hitter, led Obama with seven kills as it defeated Allderdice, 25-17, 25-23. Sadik Roberts, a 6-0 junior outside hitter, had six kills.

Obama qualified for the PIAA Class AA bracket, and Allderdice qualified in Class AAA. The PIAA tournament begins May 29.
