“Madison Caulfield is a really good shooter for us,” said Oakland Catholic head coach Shannon Boyle. “A typical basketball thing is to do a ‘pick-and-roll.’ We do a ‘pick-and-pop.’”
In the pick-and-pop, Caulfield pops to the three-point line after the screen is set.
In other schemes, senior Nicole Johnson’s left-hand dominance opens up different lines of plays for the Eagles. “She’s a really nice player form perimeter for us and also a post player,” said Boyle. Boyle explained that Oakland has setups designed to get Johnson on the left side for an attack.
The Caulfield and Johnson examples demonstrate a very important point for Oakland Catholic. “I try to design offenses and defenses specifically for my personnel,” said Boyle. “It’s been difficult this year because my personnel aren’t the same, so you see different things happen in the game designs.”
