Mike White's High School Notebook (May 9)
"The number of WPIAL baseball teams that make it through the regular season undefeated can usually be counted on a few fingers. That's what makes Norwin's undefeated run so rare.
Norwin is on the cusp of finishing the regular season undefeated for the second year in a row, which is practically unheard of in the WPIAL, at least in the past few decades. With one section game and one non-section contest remaining, Norwin has a 16-0 record in Class AAAA. A year ago, the Knights also rolled through the regular season with a 16-0 record.
The WPIAL playoffs start next week and Norwin will go swinging into the postseason. The Knights average 9.4 runs per game and have a team batting average of .358. The leaders are J.J. Matijevic (.510 average), Max Redovan (.467) and Nick Kolat (.450). Kolat also has a 7-0 pitching record with three saves while Nick Cubarney is 5-0."
