The Norwin girls’ track team prayer and eighth straight WPIAL finals
The Norwin girls’ track team has made it to the WPIAL Class AAA team finals every year for eight years now. But this year is special.
Head coach Trinity Morgan was forced to miss the first month of the season due to a family emergency. Furthermore, a couple of Norwin’s best hurdlers (Jenna Nguyen and Jess Eckersberg) had to get up to speed and health before being able to increase their scoring contributions. Furthermore, the sprinting core is mostly of younger students. Kelsey Plecenik, Marlee Bivens, and Amada Beatty had to learn about varsity-level expectations and how to meet them.
But, veteran leadership like senior Autumn Greba’s (as well as by-example leadership from the distance specialists) has brought the team back to the finals. The Knights beat West Allegheny 82-68, and they beat Mt. Lebanon 83-67. (Norwin’s score over Kiski was 100-50)
“They have a team prayer they say,” said Morgan, talking about the ways the girls pull together to meet goals. Former coach Geary Trey (now the coach of Norwin cross country) started the team prayer in the 1970’s. “They get off the bus and huddle together,” Morgan described how the girls say their prayer. “Before relays or certain races, they might huddle up and say it again.”
