Sophomore slugger Matijevic standing out for Norwin baseball team

Written by Brad Everett on .

The undefeated Norwin baseball team has four seniors and one junior who have committed to play at Division I schools, but it’s a sophomore playing his first season as a full-time starter who has been one of the team’s biggest stars.

J.J. Matijevic, a sophomore shortstop, is second on the team in hitting (.500), and leads the Knights in home runs (five), RBIs (31) and runs scored (21). The team’s cleanup hitter, Matijevic didn’t begin seeing varsity action until the second half of last season.

Matijevic has had some big offensive performances for Norwin, which has scored at least seven runs in all but two games. In a 16-1 win against Albert Gallatin that last just four innings, Matijevic had a monster game, hitting two doubles, a grand slam and finishing with seven RBIs.

The Knights (14-0 overall, 9-0 in section play) can clinch a share of the Class AAAA Section 2 title with a win at Latrobe this afternoon.
