Norwin hockey team's season ends in quarterfinals
A winning record, a second-place finish in its section, a playoff berth, a quarterfinal appearance.
These are what the Norwin hockey team hopes its 2011-12 season is remembered for.
The Knights (12-10-2) completed their season with a 9-2 loss to two-time reigning Class AAA Penguins Cup finalist Canon-McMillan in a quarterfinal game Friday.
Norwin began its season 4-1 and added a six-game unbeaten streak soon thereafter. The Knights swept a quality State College team in consecutive games, boasted a victory against Section 3-AAA champion Central Catholic and are to this day still the most recent team to put a blemish on Bethel Park's record (a 2-2 tie Jan. 2).
The Knights' senior goaltending duo of Ryan Boccabella and Scott Cromling was arguably the best tandem in the PIHL. Norwin's Dan Merz ranked eighth in Class AAA in points with 47 and was sixth in goals with 25.
"I think we feel that, as a team, we definitely left some points on the table in the second half of the season," coach James Reith said.
