Norwin's Merz leads PIHL Class AAA in scoring
Seven weeks into the PIHL high school hockey season, no one in Class AAA has more points than Norwin's Dan Merz.
Merz, a junior forward, has 19 points through six games for the Knights to lead the classification's scoring race. Merz has nine goals and 10 assists, and he had a point streak snapped in Norwin's most recent game Dec. 1 against North Allegheny. Merz also had at least one assist in each of the Knights' first four games. His season high was seven Nov. 14 against Fox Chapel.
Merz had 40 points (23 goals, 17 assists) in 20 games as a sophomore last season, and had 11 goals and eight assists as a freshman. He finished ninth in the Class AAA scoring race last season.
Norwin is 4-2 heading into a Section 4-AAA showdown later on today. The Knights will make the drive to State College, where they will play the Little Lions 7:10 p.m. at the Penn State Ice Arena.
