North Hills' Mary Malone is PG's girls' sports Athlete of the Week

Written by Mike White and Brad Everett on .

Last week: Malone finished second in the WPIAL Class AAA cross country championships last Thursday at Cooper's Lake Campground near Slippery Rock, qualifying her for this weekend's PIAA championships in Hershey.

Check this out: Malone, a junior, is one of the best all-around runners in the WPIAL. As a sophomore, she placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run at the WPIAL Class AAA track championships. She is one of three Malone sisters who are excellent runners. Margo Malone won last year's WPIAL cross country championship and now competes for Syracuse. Shannon Malone is a senior at North Hills who saw her cross country season cut short after sustaining a broken right foot.

What has it been like running against your sisters in big races? It's awesome. I love having them to run with. I always know they'll be up front and I can gauge how I'm doing. We're competitive, but it's fun. We're like best friends.

Have you become a Syracuse fan? Yeah. We dropped [Margo] off [at Syracuse] and got to see the school. Then we went to one of her races. This past week she came home for WPIALs and surprised the team.

What do you like more, cross country or track? I like both the same. When it's cross country season, I like cross country more. When it's track season, I like track more.

Who has the best pizza? There's a place called Bella Donne in West View. We order a pizza with chicken, spinach and feta. We call it the Malone Special. We tell them that, and they know what we mean.

If you could take a vacation anywhere, where would it be? Maybe Ireland because it's where my family is from and it looks beautiful there.

Most people would be surprised to know that ... I have a little brother. His name is Patrick. He's 10-years-old. Everybody talks about my sisters and I, but nobody talks about him.
