North Catholic boys basketball team's season ends in first round of PIAA playoffs
The North Catholic boys basketball team won its first 14 games it played this season against Class A competition. Unfortunately for the Trojans, they lost their final two.
North Catholic was upset by Cornell in the WPIAL semifinals Feb. 28. Then it lost a PIAA tournament first-round game this past Friday, 61-5t0, to District 10's West Middlesex.
That completed the Trojans' season at 18-7 and marked the second consecutive campaign in which it lost in the WPIAL semifinals and the PIAA first round. These past two seasons, the Trojans have been competing at the Class A level after winning the 2009 and 2010 WPIAL Class AA titles.
This is the sixth consecutive season and eighth time in nine years North Catholic advanced to the PIAA tournament.
A highlight of this season included sweeping unbeaten in Section 2-A play to win that title. Junior forward Danny Savulchak led the Trojans in scoring at 19.5 points per game, followed by senior guard Brandt Gribbin at 11.8 per contest.
Senior forward Jon LeGrande also will graduate, but the remainder of the Trojans rotation figure to return to what, again, likely will be a PIAA tournament contending-level team. That includes junior guard Pat Reilly, sophomore guard Ryan Kirby, sophomore forward Ryan Long and freshman guard Timon Gribbin.
