North Allegheny's Leftwich shining in state football playoffs, too

Written by John D'Abruzzo on .

Even in the state playoffs, North Allegheny’s Mack Leftwich continues to shred through defenses. The Tigers’ star quarterback was near perfect during last week’s 56-6 PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinal victory against Erie McDowell.

Leftwich, who even rushed for one touchdown against McDowell, completed 14 of 15 passes for 284 yards and five touchdowns. In four postseason games, Leftwich has completed 48 of 78 passes for 910 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Senior wide receiver Gregg Garrity paced North Allegheny’s corps of receivers with seven receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Garrity caught touchdown passes of 23 and 29 yards, respectively. Skylar Cox also had two touchdowns and caught two passes for a total of eight yards, while Brendan Coniker hauled in two catches for 77 yards and a score.
Garrity, whose father Gregg Garrity Sr. starred at North Allegheny and Penn State before playing eight seasons in the NFL with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, has been a key target for Leftwich all season. Through 14 games, Garrity Jr., is averaging a little more than 20 yards a catch and has collected 55 receptions for 1,107 yards and 16 touchdowns for the undefeated Tigers.

North Allegheny (14-0) has now posted a 43-2 record since the beginning of the 2010 season. The Tigers advance to the state’s western final and will play Wilson (13-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mansion Park Stadium in Altoona.
