North Allegheny makes its mark on WPIAL football history
Clairton won its fifth straight Class A WPIAL championship and set a state record with 60 consecutive victories, and Class AA Aliquippa claimed a WPIAL-record 15th district crown.
North Allegheny also put its name in the record books by becoming the first Class AAAA team to win three straight WPIAL titles.
“It’s a collective thing with the group of seniors that we have,” Tigers coach Art Walker said. “They’ve experienced it since they were in 10th grade and they have the work ethic, the sacrifice and the commitment that’s involved.
“To have a group that’s done so much over the past three years, for me as a coach, is remarkable to see.”
Another remarkable note is the fact that Walker has coached five WPIAL championship teams. Walker tied his father, Art Walker Sr., as well as Upper St. Clair’s Jim Render and Woodland Hills’ George Novak for the most Quad-A titles by a coach.
Besides the past three he won at North Allegheny, the younger Walker won a pair coaching Central Catholic.
Considered the No. 1-ranked Class AAAA team in the state by the Post-Gazette, the Tigers (13-0) now shift their efforts to the PIAA playoffs and a chance to make the Quad-A title game for the second time in three years. North Allegheny, which won its first state crown in 1990, beat La Salle College, 21-0, to win the Class AAAA state championship in 2010.
