Coach proud of North Allegheny baseball team despite semifinal loss
Down early in the WPIAL Class AAAA baseball semifinal Monday night, North Allegheny didn't quite. Just like the Tigers didn't give up on their season.
North Allegheny was eliminated from the postseason with a 3-2 loss to Mt. Lebanon at the Burkett Complex in Robinson Monday. The Tigers couldn't claw back from an early 3-0 deficit the way they had fought their way to within a run of the WPIAL title game after a poor start to the season.
"We were 2-4, then 3-6 at one point," coach Andy Maddix said. "We faced adversity before and we didn't quit then, so there's no reason to suspect our kids would quit now. We were rolling and we put ourselves in a good spot to have a chance to win this game. It just didn't go our way today."
North Allegheny (13-10) won 10 of its next 13 after its poor start, going 8-4 in the brutal Section 1-AAAA schedule to earn a playoff spot.
The Tigers missed the playoffs last season, ending a 25-year streak. They made it back in this season -- and almost made it all the way to the final.
"Our team really came together once we got rolling into section play," Maddix said. "I'm very, very proud of our guys. We gave everything we had when we were down 3-0. We didn't quit, we scored a couple runs, we made them make some plays."
