The Upper St. Clair boys are poised to give North Allegheny another run for their money this season. In 2011 the Panthers snapped a five-year title reign held by the Tigers. Last season North Allegheny (308.5 points) edged the Panthers (261 points). The Panthers must replace PIAA qualifier Andrew Tomiczek but will return juniors Avery Hsu, Alex Hardwick and Nathan Novak and sophomores Jake Johnsen and Ryan Dudzinski. Last season Dudzinski and Hardwick finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle at WPIALs. Dudzinski is the top returning boys’ backstroker in the WPIAL this season. Novak finished fourth in the 50 freestyle at WPIALs last season.

Peters Township finished third in the team standings last season, they should be another solid contender this season along with Bethel Park. Peters Township edged Bethel Park 191.5 to 191 for third place in the WPIAL Class AAA boys’ team standings last season. Peters Township returns the most talent in the South Zone with seniors Dan Pletz, Chris Buzard and Kyle Higgins all back. Bethel Park counters with senior Erik Brinkhoff, the reigning WPIAL champion in the 50 freestyle and senior Zachary Misak, another sprint freestyler.

South Fayette senior Ryne Fromholzer is one of the top distance freestylers in the WPIAL. He finished in fourth place in the 500 freestyle at WPIALs last season. South Park junior Billy Roundtree is the reigning WPIAL Class AA boys’ diving champion. He will be challenged by South Fayette junior Stephen Zombek and Elizabeth Forward senior Josh Vasko this season. West Mifflin junior won a rare WPIAL gold medal for the program last season in the 100 butterfly as a sophomore.
