Mt. Lebanon's Frey has state runner-up finish in girls' tennis

History suggested that Mt. Lebanon junior Callie Frey entered the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament as one of the favorites to take the tile.

Coming into the tournament, eight of the past nine Class AAA state singles champions came from the WPIAL and seven of those were the WPIAL championship.

Frey won the WPIAL title without losing a set. In fact, she entered the state tournament with an undefeated mark.

The other favorite was District 1 champion Cristina Kaiser of Plymouth Whitemarsh. Kaiser was the 2011 PIAA Class AAA singles runner-up and also entered the tournament undefeated.

Both went through the first three rounds without losing a set. Frey defeated Methacton’s Mihaela Codreanu, Susquehannock’s Katie Wagner and Harriton’s Hannah Drayton before facing off against the fellow junior, Kaiser.

The two went back and forth in the first set, with each winning five of the first 10 points. But Kaiser got the final two points to win the set. Kaiser then won the final set 6-3 to win the match.

“It was an excellent match,” Mt. Lebanon coach Ginny Chambers said. “[Kaiser] just had a few more shots that gave her the edge.”

Both players are juniors, so a rematch could be possible next season.
