Mt. Lebanon girls' tennis showing it is again a WPIAL title contender

The Mt. Lebanon girls tennis team has reached the WPIAL final four each of the past two seasons.

But both years, once in the finals and once in the semifinals, the Blue Devils were knocked out by Shady Side Academy.

Coach Ginny Chambers and her team would like to see SSA again this year on a way to a title.

“We do [want to see them], absolutely,” Chambers said. “But we don’t only have our eyes on them. Certainly Shady Side is a strong team every year, but there are other strong teams, too, that we’ll have to compete against.

“We’ve fallen a couple matches short of goals the past few years. Hopefully we can turn it around this season.”

Mt. Lebanon went 7-0 through the first round of conference play. Junior Callie Frey, a WPIAL quarterfinalist in singles last season, leads the team. Frey also finished second in the Class AAA WPIAL and PIAA doubles tournaments with Annie Baich, a senior who is the Blue Devils’ No. 2 singles player this season.

“They are excellent players and excellent girls,” Chambers said. “They know what the level of expectations are here.”

Senior Jessie Warshaw was a doubles player for her first three years, but is now Mt. Lebanon’s No. 3 singles player. She went undefeated through the first round of section play.

Freshman Kristi Riley and sophomore Christine Lederer occupy the No. 1 doubles position for the Blue Devils. Three girls, senior Katie Parrish, sophomore Marikate Resse and senior Lauren West, rotate at the No. 2 doubles spot.
