PIAA playoffs give Mt. Lebanon boys lacrosse team a lift

Written by Joe Koch on .

When Mt. Lebanon fell to Shady Side Academy 8-3 in the WPIAL Division 1 boys lacrosse semifinals, there arguably was a profound sense of disappointment as the Blue Devils would not be able to defend the WPIAL championship they won a year ago with a 10-8 victory over Sewickley Academy.

But in Division 1 lacrosse, the WPIAL advances three teams to the state tournament. So, it was with a profound sense of urgency the Blue Devils met the Pine-Richland Rams in the WPIAL Division 1 consolation game on Friday evening at Chartiers Valley High Stadium.

True to the form that has earned them the No. 2 ranking for boys teams according to Laxpower.com, the Blue Devils earned an 11-6 victory over the No. 4 Rams and won't have to put the gear away just yet. The victory improved Mt. Lebanon's overall record to 14-6. PIAA playoff pairings have been released, and the Blue Devils will get a chance to move on with a first-round meeting with the Raiders at 7 p.m. Wednesday at North Allegheny High School.

Prior to the semifinal loss to Shady Side Academy, Mt. Lebanon had not lost to another WPIAL team. One of their 14 victims was Seneca Valley, whom the Blue Devils defeated 7-5 at the Raiders stadium. Coming into this game, Seneca Valley is the top-ranked boys team in Western Pennsylvania, according to Laxpower.com.

With the game set, expect a highly competitive game with plenty at stake for both teams. A victory puts the winner at the top of the regional rankings. More importantly, it meas a berth in the PIAA tournament's quarterfinals.
