Mt. Lebanon to be tested in first round of baseball playoffs

Written by Brad Everett on .

One of the top first-round WPIAL Class AAAA playoff matchups will take place today when Mt. Lebanon plays Plum at Woodland Hills.

Mt. Lebanon (11-8) finished third in Section 3. The Blue Devils are 7-4 in their last 11 games, with all of the losses coming against the teams finishing ahead of them in the section – Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair. Each of Mt. Lebanon’s losses have come to playoff teams. The Blue Devils are led by senior shortstop Ian Happ.

Plum (14-5) was on a roll before ending the regular-season with back-to-back losses. The Mustangs, who were co-champions of Section 4, won 11 consecutive games prior to dropping a 2-1 decision at Gateway and a 7-6 defeat at Shaler. The Gateway loss cost the Mustangs the outright section title. Senior left-hander Anthony Garofalo is the ace of Plum’s pitching staff.

The teams were scheduled to play at Plum on March 31, but the game was postponed and later cancelled.
