Running back duo leads Mount Pleasant to win in WPIAL football playoffs

Written by Brad Everett on .

The majority of the teams still alive in the WPIAL playoffs have a standout running back they are counting on to be a big contributor down the stretch.

Mount Pleasant has two.

The duo of junior Tyler Mellors and senior Taylor Allison continued their terrific seasons by combining for 294 yards rushing and seven touchdowns in leading No. 9 Mount Pleasant (8-2) to a 48-28 win at No. 8 Burrell in a Class AA first-round game last Friday.

To put it in baseball terms, Mellors was the starter and Allison the closer. Mellors rushed 185 yards and scored the Vikings first four touchdowns, finding the end zone on runs of 22, 1, 54 and 2 yards. Allison ran for 109 yards and scored the team’s final three touchdowns on runs of 16, 27 and 36 yards.

Mellors has rushed for 1,426 yards and 25 touchdowns this season. Allison has added 741 yards and 13 scores.

The Vikings play top-seed and defending champion Aliquippa (10-0) in a quarterfinal Friday at Peters Township.
