As expected, Mount Pleasant softball team sprints out of gate
First-year coach Rick Shaheen knew there would be some normal challenges that comes with taking over a team but he also knew there was plenty to be optimistic about.
“We are looking for a good year and have worked hard to prepare for the season,” Shaheen said in the preseason. “This is the first year for me and the team, so we do have a learning curve to deal with.”
Turns out he was right about the optimism. The Vikings have started the season 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Section 4-AA. They own section wins over East Allegheny and Greensburg Central Catholic, outscoring the two teams by a combined 20-2.
Shaheen inherits an experienced team that returns senior pitcher Leigha Pehrson who went 15-3 last season while hitting .402. Other key contributors back with their 2011 batting average are senior catcher Shayla Landman (.430), senior shortstop Whitney Thompson (.324), junior third baseman Jocelyn Gula (.497), junior leftfielder Derica Cronley (.350), junior rightfielder Sadie Paul (.300) and junior first baseman Jenna Szelong (.320).
