“The New Castle team is certainly one of the stronger teams in the tournament,” says head coach Scott Giacobbi, describing his team’s impression of the first playoff opponent. “That’s based on this year and New Castle’s past performance. Also, they’re coming out of a very strong section and they are always competitive. We have our work cut out for us.”
In case you hadn’t heard yet, Mt. Pleasant is the 6-seed on the Class AAA bracket. The Vikings will play New Castle on Wednesday. But the Mt. Pleasant team will not get “hyper” over a solid seeding and weighty matchup.
The Mt. Pleasant team consists of mostly juniors and seniors, so the memory of losing to Blackhawk after two rounds of playoffs in 2011 is probably still very fresh. In the state playoffs, Mt. Pleasant did not make it past Hollidaysburg in the first round. Still, these memories may only serve to motivate this season’s successful Vikings.
“This is our fifth year to qualify so the excitement level is what you’d expect it to be,” says Giacobbi. “But we’re coming up to the opening round game,” he added. Giacobbi explains that aside from the team’s typical excitement about playoffs, he wants them to stay grounded in their usual business.
“We just want to do the same type of game prep that’s resulted in success throughout the course of the year,” Giacobbi added.
Tip-off for Mt. Pleasant and New Castle is Wednesday, February 22.
