Moon girls' soccer team set to take on WPIAL wrecking crew
District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep has reached the PIAA Class AA semifinals, blazing a trail past WPIAL opponents.
Mercyhurst Prep defeated Belle Vernon 2-1 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs and it surprised WPIAL champion Mars, 1-0 in the PIAA quarterfinals.
Next up is WPIAL runner-up Moon. The teams will play Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Franklin High School.
WPIAL competition is nothing new to Mercyhurst Prep.
In the regular season it participated in the South Hills Classic and Peters Township tournaments. Overall this season it is 3-3 against WPIAL teams with wins over Mt. Lebanon, Belle Vernon and Mars and losses to Bethel Park, South Park and Peters Township.
“I was a little bit surprised they beat Mars,” Moon coach Bill Pfeifer said. “I was actually more surprised that they shut Mars out. Mercyhurst is a nice team, we know most of their kids. A lot of those kids up there play together year-round.”
Moon (22-2) fell to Mars in the WPIAL championship game. It bounced back to shut out District 6 champion Forest Hills 3-0 and District 3 champion Trinity 2-0.
In the win over Trinity, Moon got first-half goals from Antonia Grese and Kallie Conte and a shutout from goalie Nicole Falcione, her 16th of the season.
