Moon girls' soccer team looks to regroup in state tournament

Moon girls’ soccer coach Bill Pfeifer has seen his team win a WPIAL championship only to have a tough time in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. Now Pfeifer’s team is heading into the PIAA playoffs as WPIAL Class AA runner-up.

While the Tigers wish they had WPIAL gold, not silver, hanging around their necks, Pfeifer knows he can anticipate a hungry team today when Moon (20-2) takes on District 6 champion Forest Hills (18-0-1) at 5 p.m. at Hollidaysburg High School.

Moon lost to Mars 2-1 in the sixth round of a penalty kick shootout on Saturday in the WPIAL championship game.

“I have been through these state playoffs before, I thought we played better the teams we did not win the WPIALs,” Pfeifer recalled. “When you lose in the WPIAL finals you turn around and go into states with something out there for you to grab. Our girls are excited.”

Moon will have to travel over two hours to get to Hollidaysburg. Forest Hills has a strong central midfield with two players who have over 100 career goals.

“Any time you play a No. 1 seed from a district, you have to be ready,” Pfeifer said.
