Moon’s Culley went to state cross country meet after best-ever WPIALs run
Moon senior Chris Culley did not move down in class (to Class AA) like the girls’ cross country team at his school did. It didn’t matter. Culley still placed sixth overall (in the WPIAL Class AAA) with a time of 16:29. Assistant coach Larry Covelli felt that the performance was one of Culley’s best runs.
Covelli said that he wished both the girls’ and boys’ teams could have competed in the same class, but he was glad that both teams had state qualifiers. The Moon girls’ team sent senior Madison Marince and sophomore Isabelle Marsh to the PIAA Championships yesterday. Of particular interest is the fact that Marsh is a sophomore; she may return to cross country next year with veteran potential.
Another Moon girls’ runner, Elisabeth DeNardo had missed the 15-person state qualifying window by only six seconds. DeNardo is also a sophomore.
Overall, Covelli was pleased with both Moon’s boys’ and girls’ teams, even though neither attended the state meet as a team. He attributed the lack of team contention (at least for the girls) to a generally off-day of running at the WPIAL championship meet. “It was a weird day with the heat,” he’d said.
