Moon boys lacrosse team earns historic victory

Written by Joe Koch on .

In the third game of the season, Moon Area was playing its first game against a member of the WPIAL's Division 2 classification following successive losses to fellow Independents Fairview (6-5) and Knoch (12-7).

Many observers would have concluded the second-year Tigers would be overmatched against the Seton-LaSalle Rebels, and they were right as the Rebels rolled to a 12-0 victory over the host Tigers on March 31.

The Tigers then dropped their next game, 13-3, to Erie Cathedral Prep, another Independent.

Since that loss to the Ramblers, the Tigers have embarked on a remarkable turnaround that saw them win seven of their next eight games heading into Friday's rematch with Seton-LaSalle at the Rebels' field.

On this occasion, though, there would be no lopsided margin. Moon Area matched Seton-LaSalle all over the field and took the game into a first and then a second overtime where the Tigers prevailed by a 9-8 margin. It was the second time Moon Area had played a double-overtime game. On April 10, Moon edged Trinity, a Division 1 member, by a 7-6 margin.

With an 8-5 record, Moon has to win just one of its four remaining games to assure itself of a record better than the .500 mark. Those games will be against Gateway (0-4), Winchester Thurston (3-8) of Division 2 and rematches with Fairview (2-9) and Erie Cathedral Prep. Quite a turnaround for a team that finished its first season in 2011 with a 1-6 record.
