Montour softball team doing it with power hitting
Montour pitcher Kaitlyn Kutchman can certainly bring the heat, but if you ask most opposing coaches why Montour will playing for a WPIAL Class AAA championship on Thursday, they’ll tell you it’s because of the power in the Montour lineup.
The Spartans climbed their way into the WPIAL final thanks to a game-tying two-run home run from Mallory Gerst in the seventh inning that forced extra innings. In those extra innings Tori Roman laced a double into the outfield that scored Emily Diecks to give Montour a 3-2 win.
Unlike in Montour’s first two wins, 12-2 five-inning triumphs over New Castle and Yough, the Montour bats only came alive late in the game, but the timing couldn’t be better.
“Looking at Montour, they are definitely a team with a lot of power who can drive the ball,” said Elizabeth Forward coach Harry Further who has the task of matching up with them Thursday at California University. “We have seen quicker pitchers than Kaitlyn, she is not the fastest pitcher we have seen but she moves the ball in and out of the strike zone very well.”
