Alumni Update - Sarah Capp (Robert Morris)
Robert Morris senior first baseman Sarah Capp, a Montour High School graduate, was selected as the Northeast Conference Softball Player of the Week.Capp becomes the first student-athlete in the league to win the player of the week award twice this season. She also joins her classmate, outfielder Jaci Timko, a Chartiers-Houston High School graduate, as one of only two players in the entire conference to win multiple player of the week honors in the same season since 2010.
Capp led the team offensively last week as she was 8-for-14 with two extra-base hits to top the squad in both average (.571) and slugging percentage (.857). She led the team with six RBI in four games and also posted a three-hit game and a multi-RBI game against both of the Colonials' opponents.
She opened the week with a 3-for-4 performance at Kent State, including blasting her sixth homer in the team's past 15 games. Capp followed that effort up by knocking in two more runs in the nightcap.
She then opened Saturday's play against in-state rival Saint Francis by going 3-for-4 with two RBI to collect her ninth multi-hit game of the season and the 25th of her career. Capp, who had a three-hit game against four of RMU's past five opponents at the end of the week, registered her ninth multi-RBI game of the season and the 20th such effort in her career in the first game of the day against the Red Flash.
Capp, who notched her third career player of the week award and fourth league honor overall, leads the team in and ranks among the top five in the NEC in batting average (.381), slugging percentage (.575), hits (43), RBI (31) and total bases (65). Her total of 31 RBI, which leads the league, is largely due to her amazing ability to come through in key situations as she is 20-for-45 (.444) with runners in scoring position thus far in 2012.
Meanwhile, Robert Morris freshman pitcher Nicole Sleith, a Yough High School graduate, doubled up by claiming both Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week accolades.
It marked just the second time in RMU history that the Colonials swept the honors since the NEC added a third honor in its weekly release. The only previous occurrence for Robert Morris took place April 9, 2001, which was exactly 11 years before this recent announcement.
Robert Morris has now won eight weekly honors this season, which is more than double the total of any other NEC school in 2012, and it also matches its league-leading figure from a season ago.
Robert Morris has now won three of the past four and five of the past nine player of the week honors from the NEC.
The Colonials are the only NEC school to have had at least one student-athlete honored in the player of the week category in each of the last five seasons.
RMU has also now claimed 14 of the past 38 weekly rookie honors dating to March 2009, a substantial figure in an 11-team league.
Capp and Sleith become the third and fourth active Colonials to have won at least four NEC weekly honors.
