Football playoffs could cause Montour boys basketball stars to miss opener

The Montour boys' basketball team's top two players might not miss a game thanks to some schedule juggling by athletic director Mitch Galiyas.

However, no one in the Spartans' athletic department will complain if senior guard Dillon Buechel and junior guard Devin Wilson wind up being out of the uniform for the first three games.

The Montour football team is still alive in the PIAA Class AAA football playoffs and will face Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt in a semifinal XXXXXX. Buechel is the Spartans' quarterback and Wilson is a standout defensive back.

Montour has rearranged its basketball schedule so it won't open until next Monday at neighboring rival Moon. If the football team loses then it is conceivable Buechel and Wilson, both All-Section 5-AAA performers last season, could play in that game.

If the football team wins, it would play either Allentown Central Catholic or Philadelphia West Catholic in the PIAA final on Dec. 16 at Hershey. On the same night, the basketball team will be playing its third game as it is scheduled to host Sto-Rox after playing at home against Mars two nights earlier.

Montour has another non-section game on Dec. 19 at Thomas Jefferson then opens Section 5-AAA play a night later at McGuffey. Even if coach Adam Kaufman would give Buechel or Wilson a day or two to decompress after a 16-game football season, they would likely be ready for the section opener.

Montour went 23-8 last season, losing in the WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA championship games.
