Defending WPIAL softball champions head into postseason

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Despite winning the WPIAL Class AAA title last season, Montour was not on many people’s short lists to make a run at another Class AAA title. The Spartans were decimated by graduation including the loss of pitcher Kaitlyn Kutchman who is now pitching at Seton Hill University. But Montour managed to rebuild in a hurry, win 9 of 12 section games and qualify for the postseason.

Montour did not win its section and it will not be a top four seed but the battle-tested Spartans could be one of the toughest outs in the WPIAL Class AAA field. Overall Montour is 12-5. It is led by senior Stacey Capp, one of the top players in the WPIAL. Capp is batting .589 with 32 runs score, 26 RBIs, nine doubles and four home runs. Junior Malory Gerst is batting .429 with 18 runs scored, 16 RBIs and three home runs. Both are returning starters as is senior Alyssa McMurtrie who is batting .352 with a team seven home runs.

Class AAA Montour stepped up in class to challenge Class AAAA Mt. Lebanon last week and the Spartans brought their A game.

Perhaps nobody rose to the challenge bigger than senior centerfielder Alyssa McMurtrie. She had a three home run game against the Blue Devils (3-8). In the 13-3 win McMurtrie drove in four Montour runs.

Experience should help Montour volleyball

Written by Ken Wunderley on .

2013 0418 Mtour SullivanExperience is the theme for the 2013 version of the Montour High School boys volleyball team.

Spartans coach Brendon Aleski entered his 12th year with a squad that featured nine players who started or lettered last year.

"This team certainly has a lot of experience," said Aleski, a Montour alumnus. "Everybody in our starting rotation has varsity experience."

The Spartans starting lineup even includes two players who were voted to the WPIAL Class AA All-Star Team last year -- Josh Sullivan and Zach Hartman.

Sullivan is a 6-foot-5 senior outside hitter who was voted first-team All-WPIAL.

"Josh became a starter in his sophomore year when we had a couple players out with injuries," Aleski said. "He's been in our starting lineup ever since. He's one of the top five outside hitters in WPIAL Class AA."
