Mars softball team back in the playoffs
It has been a long wait for the Mars softball team but now that it is finally back in the playoffs for the first time since 2006, the Planets are hoping for an extended stay.
The No. 5 seeded Planets will face No. 12 West Allegheny on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at North Allegheny.
Mars certainly has the players to contend with the best in the WPIAL Class AAA postseason field. Junior pitcher Taylor Rotz is 10-5 with a 1.78 ERA and 109 strikeouts this season. At the plate Rotz batted .415 while senior Alyse Ciafre hit .322 during the regular season. Sophomore Erin Hershman led her team with a .477 batting average, .685 on-base percentage and .866 slugging percentage. Hershman and Rotz both had 10 RBIs.
Sophomore Kasey Jones hit .319 and freshman Suzanne Papik hit .269.
