Baseball: North Feature Athlete - Mars' C.J. Weigand
Name: C.J. Weigand
School: Mars
Grade: 12
Sport: Baseball
Position: Infielder/Pitcher
Background info: Heading into Monday, Weigand was batting .349 with two home runs, a team-high five doubles and 11 RBIs in 43 at bats in 14 games primarily as the Planets' cleanup hitter. In limited action on the mound this season, Weigand is averaging 1.5 strikeouts per inning pitched.
Coach Brian Hobaugh says: "He's a big kid, maybe 6-3, 200 pounds, nice and tall to throw it over to him at first base. He's a true No. 4 hitter with a lot of power. He hits a lot of doubles, and he's capable of hitting the ball out of the park a lot... He's got smarter over time when facing curveballs and breaking balls to lay off pitches to get the count in his favor so he can see more fastballs... He's only pitched (6 2/3) innings this year, but he's a nice pitcher. He doesn't overpower you, but he can get some zip on the ball."
