Bednar leads Mars baseball team's deep pitching staff

Written by Chris Adamski on .

David Bednar has been the ace, but the Mars' Planets pitching staff runs deeper than just him. It's been those pitchers who have helped lead the Planets to the Section 4-AAA lead.

Bednar tossed Mars' first no-hitter in nine years April 2 in the section opener against Hampton. That still stands as the Talbots' only loss, and the two teams share the section lead at 6-1 in section play.

Mars has won each of its past five games -- all within the section -- and have been allowing an average less than four runs per game in those contests.

Bednar, a junior, is 5-0 with an 0.47 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. He has limited opponents to a .091 batting average and is allowing an average of only .63 walks and hits per inning pitched.

"He's a pretty darn good pitcher," Planets coach Brian Hobaugh said. "I don't know how else to say it."

Other pitchers who can be classified as "pretty darn good" include sophomores Nick Comport and Nathan Furl, junior Matt Eperesi and seniors Robbie Lipke and C.J. Weigand.
