Mars girls swimming team can hang with the boys
At the MAC swimming championships in early February, Mars senior Kurt Muehlheuser won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.59, he broke his pool record set in February 2011 by over two seconds and broke the four-year old MAC meet record.
Muehlheuser won the event by nearly seven seconds. The next fastest 100 backstroke swam at MACs was actually by his teammate junior Maggie Gruber who swam a 57.25 to win the girls’ portion of the event.
“They should have raced each other, it would have been a better race,” Mars boys and girls coach Heidi Brandon joked after the match.
What is no joke is the gold medal potential both swimmers have at the upcoming WPIAL championships March 1-2 at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool.
