Latrobe softball team gets last laugh

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Latrobe has won five of the last eight Section 1-AAAA titles.

With a surprising Norwin squad this season, the Wildcats entered the final week of section play without a chance to win a sixth title in nine years. Instead playoff-bound Latrobe had to play the role of spoiler.

Latrobe blasted Norwin 12-2 to give the Knights their first section loss of the year. Norwin (10-1), Hempfield (9-2) and Latrobe (9-3) will represent the section in the playoffs.

The win over Norwin was certainly Latrobe’s signature win of the season. It avenged an early season 8-7 loss to Norwin and it gave the Wildcats momentum as they prepare for the playoffs. Junior pitcher Olivia Gumbita got the win for Latrobe striking out ten and senior third baseman Rachel Conrad blasted a home run in the game that was shortened to five innings because of the ten-run mercy rule.
