Langley baseball team has early share of first place

Written by Sports Town on .

In its last year, Langley is sitting in a tie for first place in the City League section 2. The Mustangs were scheduled for a showdown with Obama Academy for first place on Monday but the weather took care of that.

“I thought the team might be better but some kids quit because they wanted to work,” said coach Leo Rauterkus. “That’s the way it is now unfortunately. We only have two seniors and no juniors so we’re very young.”

That youth may have turned out to be an unexpected benefit as the Mustangs didn’t know teams aren’t to come back from nine-run deficits as Langley did in a 13-12 win over Perry on Thursday.

“It was a good experience to come back from nine,” Rauterkus said. “We practice hard five days a week, weather permitting, and play hard, but we’re very young.”
