Knoch surges into the baseball playoffs

Written by Chris Adamski on .

Winners of five of their final six regular-season games, the Knoch baseball team is doing anything but "backing in" to the postseason.

The Knights are 12-7 overall and went 10-4 in Section 4-AAA play, capping their regular season this past Wednesday with a 5-2 victory on the road against a Mars team that had an 11-game winning streak coming into the game and won the section championship.

Knoch opens up play in the WPIAL Class AAA tournament with a game against Chartiers Valley (14-6) 4 p.m. today at North Allegheny. The Colts were a WPIAL semifinalist and PIAA tournament-qualifying team last season.

Senior outfielder Mac Megahan led the Knights during the regular season with a .571 average (32 hits in 56 at bats) and 24 runs scored. His 25 RBIs were second on the team to senior infielder Zach Koller's 30. Senior Justin Grossman was the Knights' top pitcher, going 5-4 with a team-high 42 strikeouts.

This is Knoch's first appearance in the WPIAL playoffs since 2010. The Knights do not have a playoff victory in the past 15 years.
