Knoch's Sanks picks Eastern Kentucky to continue her volleyball career

Knoch junior Celina Sanks has accepted a volleyball scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University. Sanks, a 5-10 outside/middle hitter, was voted to the first team of the WPIAL Class AA All-Star Team last season. She was also recognized on the PVCA Class AA All-State Team.

"I've had a few girls play Division I ball over the years, but the last came in the 90's," Knoch coach Diane Geist said. "I don't know much about Eastern Kentucky other than it's a smaller Division I school. If Celina was taller, she could play for almost any Division I team."

"Celina has got the whole package. She excels at everything and is very intelligent. If you consider everything, she's the best player I've coached."

Despite tough schedule, Knoch a playoff basketball qualifier

"2013 0207 Knoch MillerRob McNabb wasn't named Knoch's boys basketball coach until late in the summer, so he didn't make out the team's schedule.

Thus, he had no control over the Knights having back-to-back non-conference games last week against strong teams in Hampton and Chartiers Valley.

"Honestly, I wasn't hired until late July so I didn't have much input [on the schedule]," McNabb said. "It's a rough week with those two teams on the schedule.""

Knoch basketball team staying focused as the regular season closes

This week, the young 2012-13 Knights are finishing their section schedule will Valley and Mars. It’s been a hard season but they’ve done well and learned a lot. The least of which is to stay focused on the task at hand.

“Valley has been coming on strong lately,” said Knoch head coach Sean O’Donnell. He noted that the team had spent the week before on some non-section games, with Riverside and Burrell. Riverside actually defeated Knoch on Tuesday night (January 28) one of Knoch’s two seniors (Samantha Logan) shot for 11 points.

The nonsection games had been about introducing Knoch’s young players to a “playoff” type dynamic, even though section games were remaining. O’Donnell had still wanted the Knights to focus on the games at hand, not those of the following week.

“I tell them ‘don’t get too far ahead of yourselves,’” said O’Donnell.

Knoch boys' basketball team grabs huge win

The Knoch boys’ basketball team would have found themselves in a precarious position if it had suffered a second-consecutive loss last Friday.

Instead, the Knights earned a thrilling win and greatly enhanced their odds of making the postseason.

With his team trailing by a point, Knoch senior Marc Vaughan connected on a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Knights a 64-63 win at Class AAA Section 1 foe Freeport.
