What really happened when Kiski Area’s Kennedy won the Red, White, and Blue meet

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

On September 8, Brent Kennedy was running with a half mile to go on Schenley’s Red, White, and Blue meet course. Around him were equally serious contenders: Fox Chapel’s Ethan Martin, Grove City’s Daniel Jaskowiak, and Allderdice’s Ean DiSilvio.

The scene was silent but for the pounding of feet, the breathing of runners, and the falling rain. “We talk before and after the race,” Kennedy explained. “We’re all good friends. But once the race starts, nothing’s really said.”

The four runners approached the last hill before the race’s finish. As they came to the hilltop, Kennedy was ready to move. “I just kind of broke away,” he said.

The others followed, but none kept up. Kennedy won the race in furious 15:27. He was safely past the line for eight seconds before Martin joined him.

Perhaps the best way to summarize Kennedy’s story is to read the words of his coach, Tom Berzonsky: “He’s a goal oriented person,” Berzonsky said. “He has his goals that he wants to accomplish. Cross country is one of those sports where you need individual success to have the team success.”
