Video: Kiski Area won, but second was anybody’s game in the four-by-eight

This race had standouts as well as stalemates – it was great for all kinds of sports fans.

The Cavaliers took and kept a commanding lead for first place. But the race for second was cutthroat – between Norwin, Butler, Hempfield, West Mifflin, West Allegheny, and Gateway.

In the end, the front-running squad from Kiski Area (8:06.31) was:

Tennis siblings double their fun

Ryan Riordan's feature on Kiski's Paunovichs:

"Kiski Area senior Thad Paunovich qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA doubles tournament in 2012 with teammate Charles Law.

Kiski junior Tyler Paunovich advanced to the WPIAL Class AAA singles tournament this season.

But this week was special, because the brothers got to play in the district tournament together for the first time.

The Paunovich brothers, who reside in Bell Township, teamed up to finish third in the Class AAA Section 1 doubles tournament last week and qualify for Monday's WPIAL doubles tournament."

Boys' Tennis: East Features Athletes - Kiski Area's Thad Paunovich/Tyler Paunovich

Background Info: The brothers paired up to finish third at the Class AAA Section 1 singles tournament this week, which qualified them for next week’s WPIAL Class AAA doubles tournament. It will be Tyler’s second WPIAL tournament of the season, as he also played in the singles tournament after finishing third in the section. Thad played in the 2011 WPIAL Class AA doubles tournament.

Coach Ralph Antenucci: “They are very similar players. They are similar in stature, with both at about 6-2. They are tall, athletic players that like to go to the net, play aggressively and are good volleyers. They’re pretty imposing.”

Alumni Update: Tarra Oravec (Penn State New Kensington)

Penn State New Kensington junior Tarra Oravec was named the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Oravec, a Kiski Area graduate, went 2-1 as she started two games and came on in relief for another. She went 2-1 and allowed just two earned runs in 18 1/3 innings for a 0.76 ERA.
