Keystone Oaks girls basketball team rallies to stay alive

Written by Joe Koch on .

Just when it seems safe to count Keystone Oaks out of the PIAA Class AA basketball tournament, the Eagles seem to find another gear and an opponent is left wondering what happened.

That was the case on Friday night as Moniteau scored the first seven points in overtime only to see Keystone Oaks roar back with an 11-3 spurt to earn a 44-43 victory in a first-round game at North Hills High School. The victory puts the Eagles into a second-round matchup with District 6 champion Forest Hills on Tuesday night at Hempfield Area High School. The winner will meet the winner of another second-round game between Bishop Canevin and Villa Maria of Erie on Friday night.

Maryssa Agurs, a 5-9 sophomore power forward sank two free throws with four seconds left in overtime to seal the victory for the Eagles, who are 20-7 overall and one of three teams from Section 4-AA competing in the PIAA Class AA tournament.

Agurs scored six of her 19 points in overtime. Teammate Alexis Xenakis led all scorers with 20 points.
